How To: Depot Mac Eyedshadows

How To Depot Mac Eyeshadows
You might remember that I picked up one of the new Mac quad palettes last week.. well I thought it was about time I filled it, but there was only one problem.... all my eyeshadows were in pot form. I decided it was about time I de-potted them. It's something I'd put off for a long time, but it had to be done. Luckily I made sure to document my experience just in case one of my lovely readers was interested to see how it's done.

    Mac Eyeshadows (in pot form)
Hair Straightener
Tweezers
Cuticle Pusher

First step:

You need to use a thin, flat top instrument, either a pair of tweezers or a cuticle pusher and wiggle in the groove, like in the above picture. This is the easy part and it should just loosen it so you can pop it out. Then you are left with...

Obviously your eyeshadow will still be in the pan lol. Remember to put the pot somewhere safe, because we will be coming back to it later.

Now it's the hard part:

Turn on your hair straightener and place the pan on the heat for about 8-10 seconds then remove. The idea is to melt the glue not the black pan. This is the time consuming bit, pop the pan on the heat a few more times and the back should eventually look like this...

You should be able to see the glue markings underneath, now it's time to take your cuticle pusher and with the rounded side apply pressure. You might have to repeat the process a few times, it took me about 45 minutes to do all four eyeshadows, so I suggest popping on some music or watching tv or something because it is a tad boring. For example I watched an old Gossip Girl episode and it made the whole process a lot more enjoyable.

It's so satisfying when the little silver pan starts to lift. Being very careful because it will be quite hot, pop your tweezers in the groove and pull the pan out. This is where you could dent the eyeshadow, so you have to be careful with the tweezers. When the pan is fully out turn over so that the bottom is facing upwards and put to the side:

Now onto the label....

It's the same process as before but you should only need to do it once, you don't want to burn the label. It again melts the glue so you can peel off the label with the tweezers.

Now you can pop the label onto the back of the silver pan and you are done.

Abracadabra your quad is filled. It was a lot less hassle than I thought it was going to be and there were no eyeshadow casualties, so I'm very happy.

Make sure you keep your empty pans safe, when you have 6 empty mac products you can back to mac and get a free eyeshadow or lipstick, score.

Hopefully this post helped you in some way, let me know if you've ever de-potted your eyeshadows?

    1. I thought about using a candle but I just had horrific visions of me setting the house on fire, for me a straightener is safer lol :-)
