How To: DIY Neon Ombre Nails (Tutorial)

Ever since I saw the lovely Allison's ombre nail tutorial I knew I wanted to try to give it a go myself, I was in no doubt that it would be nowhere near as good as hers, but I loved the look, so the other day I gave it a go, here's how I got on.

DIY Neon Ombre Nails Tutorial
Though I love the effect, I would probably only give myself a 5 out of 10 for application, there are a few kinks that I need to iron out, but I love it. It's perfect for summer, especially if you use neon colours like I have, but I'm sure the effect would look just as gorgeous with pastels.

Here are the colors used:
China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy Nail Polish
| OPI My Vampire Is Buff | China Glaze Sun Worshiper | China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy | China Glaze Shocking Pink |

If you fancy having a go yourself here's how I did it. First of all make sure you have quite a bit of time, it took me about an hour, so it's definitely not a look to do just before you run out the door haha.

Utensils you will need:
DIY Ombre Nails
2 Make Up Sponges | Sellotape  | Base Coat | Top Coat |

First paint your nails with a base coat, to make sure you nails are protected from stains. Then apply a white nail polish, this enhances the brighter colours and creates a nice base.

When the white polish has dried, it's time to tape up you cuticles, it makes it so much easier at the end to clean up, believe me, this is a necessary step.

Tada:

Now's the fun/messy part, take your sponge and apply one stripe of each polish in the order you desire. I went for orange (even though it looks more yellow in the picture), neon pink, and shocking pink.

I also recommend unscrewing all the polish bottles beforehand, it just makes the whole process smoother. Now line up the sponge to your nail and start dabbing away, I can't think of another word to describe it haha, sorry, though you have to be careful not to disturb the white polish underneath, as you can see by my first attempt, I didn't do it perfectly. Just remember to add a new stripe of colour to every nail.

When you've finished, continue on with your other hand. Now you could stop there or like I did you could do another coat just to make the whole look brighter. After you've finished applying the polishes it's time to remove the tape, you want to make sure to remove it before the colour is completely dry as it could rip off all your hard work.

Now you can apply your topcoat and clean up any remaining polish that might have sneaked though the tape. Leave to dry and you are done.

Let me know what you think, will you be giving ombre a go?

  7. I love the colours that you picked out, they are so brilliant together and super bright! I kind of want to buy all 3 just to try to recreate the look :p This seems like a lot of fun but very time-consuming. I keep meaning to try it but the effort involved puts me off!
