Beauty Edit: Product Mixology

Remember when you were a kid in art class, mixing different paint colours, creating your own "unique" shade, usually brown (ahem)? Well for me not much has changed, except now I've switched paint, for beauty products. I think my own "mixing" journey started with this post, I mean, it makes sense, different parts of your face need different things. So, I decided to try it out with a few base products, with interesting results.

Beauty Edit: Product Mixology
Nars Sheer Glow Foundation
I decided to try mixing my all time favourite Nars Sheer Glow Foundation with a couple of different primers to see if it would make any difference to the longevity and finish. The first one to be mixed was the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer, now I know the foundation is called "Sheer Glow" but I would say if has more of a satin finish on the skin. The Radiance Primer gives an added glow boost, which really gives you the lit from within look, that we're all striving for.

My Sheer Glow does have pretty good staying power on my skin, but I do find that sometimes towards the end of the day it can tend to disappear in a few places, so I added a blob of the Hourglass Mineral Vale Primer to see if it would make any difference and it did. This little vial really added extra life to my foundation, it also made for smoother application of my bronzer and blusher and they lasted even longer than usual.

My little sample of the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops is probably the most intriguing product I'm testing out at the moment, so I'll keep this brief as I plan on doing a more in-depth post soon. But they're basically drops of concentrated pigment that you can mix into any kind of liquid. I chose Kiehls Skin Rescuer as my mixer and it works pretty well, like a tinted moisturiser.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer
You may remember from this particular post that I had a few issues with the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer at first, because of it's super creamy consistency. I can't deny the amount of coverage it gives, it just creased like a b***h. I wasn't going to give up though, I decided to try mixing in a dollop of my Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, as it does a fantastic job with my eyeshadows. Turns out adding a bit of primer was just what I needed, it really helps my concealer cling to my under-eyes and adds much needed longevity.

Sometimes, if my under-eyes are looking particularly grey, I like to add a bit of the Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush On Glow BB Highlighter into the mix (see what I did there hehe) to add a bit more of a brightening effect.

Beauty Mixology
The sky really is the limit when it comes to mixing, whether you have oily, dry or combination skin, you can tailor make any beauty product to your own specifications. Who says beauty is superficial, we're scientists at heart haha.

Have you tried mixing any of your beauty products? What beauty concoctions have you come up with?

XOXO Claire

  2. Love that you added a kitchen whisker as a prop for the "mixology" word play lol. I personally love to mix my NARS sheer glow foundation with Rimmel Wake Me Up as it creates the perfect shade and dewy consistency x

  4. Your photos are just beautiful Claire. I love the idea of this, although I've not tried very much myself buttt I have been loving double priming by using a hydrating one first and then a pore refining one over the top. It sounds like real high maintenance but it makes SUCH a difference xx

  6. I mix my products all the time! I normally mix my L'Óreal Infallible with a BB Cream or a moisturiser to have my skin hydrated but with coverage still.
I hope you have a great day, lovely xx
