First Impressions: Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF30

When in comes to bases Nars are at the top of their game, in my opinion. Their first foundation, the ever famous Sheer Glow has cemented it's status as my all time favourite, which is quite some feat considering my inability to make a beauty commitment. So when I caught wind of their new release, the Velvet Matte Skin Tint, I knew I had to add to my Nars family and see how it compared to it's predecessor.

I've only used this Skin Tint a handful of times so far, this is going to be more of a "first impressions" post than a full on review. So lets get started:

Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF30

Whereas the "Sheer Glow" foundation doesn't necessarily live up it's name, the Velvet Matte Skin Tint certainly does. It's a light to medium coverage foundation, that dries semi-matte, with a velvety finish, exactly as the name would suggest. It does a good job at covering my imperfections, though I do still need to use a concealer, it doesn't completely cover my redness. I've read a few reviews saying that it doesn't work well with a brush and should be applied with your fingers, but I actually used my damp Real Techniques Miracle Sponge and found that combination worked really well.

As someone who suffers with larger than average pores across my cheeks and nose, I always try to use a primer beforehand, especially when trying out any new base products. The combination of a good moisturiser and pore perfecting primer really help create a smooth surface. Thanks to this step, I personally didn't have any problems with this foundation settling into my pores, which is normally one of my biggest issues with face products.

I would say this foundation is more suited to oily/combination or a more normal skin type rather than dry, as I imagine it could cling on any particularly dry patches. The formula is quite creamy so I'm not 100% sure, as I myself have combination skin. This foundation comes in 12 shades which is considerably less than the Sheer Glow (that has 20), but I still think that's a pretty good selection.

I got the lightest shade Terre-Neuve, which is an almost perfect match, though it does have a bit more of a yellow under tone, but it's nothing a bit of blending doesn't fix. Overall I'm pretty happy with how this foundation is performing, I can't call it amazing just yet, but it's definitely worth getting a sample, or if you're a rebel like me buying the full size haha. I'll make sure to keep you updated if anything changes, but so far I'm really liking it.

Have you tried this Skin Tint? What are your thoughts? What's your go-to brand for bases?

XOXO Claire

  1. I've tried this product and like it, however, it only lasts about 5 hours before it oxidizes on me! I stick to the MUFE for foundation as it makes me look the most natural.

  3. Aww no that's such a shame, that happens to me with both Mac and Bourjois foundations so I undertand where you're coming from. Have you tried using a primer underneath to create a barrier? That could help :)

  4. I absolutely love Nars, the Sheer Glow is my all time favourite foundation, but this skin tint is coming a close second. I definitely recommend getting a sample! :)

  5. I loved Sheer Glow but had started to notice that when my dry skin got to its worse I couldn't use it anymore as I have such dry skin! But a good review to ensure me that this isn't a foundation for me! I do love the squeezy bottle though, much more efficient for travel than the glass bottles! xx

  6. Aww that's a shame, but it probably wouldn't work for dry skin, I do love the tube though, for so long I used the Sheer Glow without a pump and it was so annoying :)

  10. I had a love hate relationship with NARS Sheer Glow as well, but I do really like it now! I would definitely be interested in reading another lip product addict tag because I'm also a lipstick junkie ;). And, you're definitely not the only one.. I cringe at my old posts all the time haha!

  20. I wish I had picked this up now when they had their offer on in Space NK, I have really bad pores but struggle with a primer because my skin is oily but dehydrated too! I might try a silcone based one again and see how I get on xx
